About the Coalition

Welcome to End the Contract Coalition ("ECC"). We are an ad-hoc group of law students and organizers that are demanding that law schools divest from Immigration and Customs Enforcement ("I.C.E").

About the Contract (https://theintercept.com/2021/04/02/ice-database-surveillance-lexisnexis/)

Thomson Reuters and RELX PLC, the parent companies of Westlaw and Lexis respectively, both have contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Pursuant to these contracts, the companies provide enormous amounts of individuals' personal data to ICE and to other law enforcement agencies, who then use the data to locate, detain, and deport our community members and loved ones.

In April of 2021, LexisNexis signed a $16.8 million contract with ICE, further consolidating the relationship between legal research companies and law enforcement agencies. This contract has since increased to $22.1 million. The contract states that LexisNexis will provide Homeland Security investigators with access to billions of records containing personal data from an array of public and private sources, including credit history, bankruptcy records, license plate images, and cellular subscriber information. Both Thomson Reuters and RELX have a history of supplying ICE with person-specific data which allows the agency to conduct rapid searches for personal information.

Specifically, we are demanding the following:

LexisNexis Must End Its $16.8 million Data-Sharing Contract With I.C.E.

Thomson Reuters Must Reject Future Contracts with I.C.E.

Law School Deans Must End Their Contracts with LexisNexis and WestLaw (Thompson Reuters)

Law School Deans Must Publicly Condemn LexisNexis and WestLaw's Contract With I.C.E.

Law Schools Must Offer Alternative Research Methods Under their Legal Writing Curriculum

Law Schools Must Commit to Educating Students About LexisNexis and WestLaw's Harmful Practices & Partnerships in the 1L Legal Writing Curriculum
